Shri S. Ramakrishnan, who was normal, was doing his final year at the Government College of Technology, Coimbatore. While doing the Naval recruitment exercises, he fell down during the test and suffered multiple spine injuries which resulted in complete paralysis below the neck and total amnesia below C3 and C4 rib cage. He did not lose his courage and enthusiasm. After intense self-rehabilitation, he wanted to serve the society and spend his remaining life meaningfully. He decided to do something concrete and really useful to the under-privileged section of the society in his area and started Amar Seva Sangam, named after his Doctor Air Marshall Amarjit Singh Chahal in 1981, the International year of the disabled, was registered under Tamilnadu Societies Registration Act, 1975.

Sri S. Sankara Raman is a wheelchair user affected by Muscular Dystrophy, and a practicing Chartered Accountant. He left his lucrative practice at Chennai, joined Amar Seva Sangam in 1992. As a young professional his dream was to build a “Valley for the Disabled” with Shri. S. Ramakrishnan. Their vision is to make Amar Seva Sangam a model centre catering to all the needs of the disabled.
Dr. S. Sumathi:
Late Dr. S. Sumathi, who was a doctorate in commerce, opted for voluntary retirement after 27 years of teaching experience to join Amar Seva Sangam in 2002 and from then onwards she was incharge of Vocational Training Activities and the IGNOU and Alagappa University study centres at the Sangam.
